Sand the hull with 220grit to 320grit sandpaper after making sure the surface is clean and dry. Wipe away all sanding residue and sand the hull again with 80grit sandpaper. Wipe away the sanding residue.

It goes without saying that the paint layer needs some time to bond between each application so be patient and dont rush the process. When gelcoat oxidizes, it enables water to penetrate the surface. The water works into the compromised surface to form tiny pits, and eventually blisters and bubbles. The sooner you restore your fiberglass boats finish, the better, because oxidation and water damage get worse, and make the restoration process much more difficult.
Look for any scrapes, dings or gouges on the boat''s surface that need repair. Fill these areas with an epoxy filler and allow to dry. Sand the filler down with 60grit sand paper and a dual action sander. Sand again with 80grit sand paper to smooth the scratches made with the 60grit paper.
#0183;#32;To roll and tip, first dip the roller in the paint and roll it onto the hull. Try not to put too much paint on the roller; otherwise, you may get runs. Roll fore and aft and then up and down to ensure the best coverage. Use the tip or end of a dry finehair brush to tip the paint smooth.
Though gel coat may be the best bet for coloring fiberglass, since it is made of fiberglass resin, paint even works better as it protects the fiberglass against sun exposure and longterm corrosion. All you need to do is just sand the surface and coat it with a primer and color for best effect.
2 #0183;#32;A fresh coat of paint may bring an old fiberglass boat or greenhouse back to life. Fiberglass is light and often used for construction of such items as hot tubs, boats and greenhouses. When the paint on these items fades or wears, the visual value falls.
Boat hulls constructed with GRP are finished with a gel coat, essentially a polyester resin sprayed into the boat''s mould before the fibreglass is laid down. These boats can be painted in similar fashion as cars, except you have to use a marine paint rather than automotive paint.

An orbital sander would be good for sanding a flat piece, like a surfboard, or any flat area. An orbital sander gives the painter a flat surface to sand with. An orbital sander does a great job. However, something with a lot of curved surfaces, like a fiberglass boat, the use of an orbital sander is very limited.

A boatyard may apply only one coat which would mean that you would have to pull the boat out of the water sooner. Each year a layer of the paint wears away, and it is recommended to put another layer on each year.
#0183;#32;Using an orbital sander, sand in a circular motion or up and down to avoid making indentations by keeping the sander in one place for too long. Sand up and down to create a smooth finish that will be unnoticeable on the hull after paint is applied. Feel hull to test for smoothness. Continue sanding until very smooth (like glass).
Prime the fiberglass before you start with the paint. Pour the fiberglass primer to the spray gun and apply an even coat, covering the entire surface and spray. Allow the first coat to dry and then spray a second coat primer onto the fiberglass and wait till it completely dries off.
#0183;#32;Paint choices run the full range from cheap acrylic house paint, to the stuff they use on the nose of fighter jets. Inside the bait wells, you''ll want something fairly hard, durable and high gloss. The reason is it''ll take a beating (cleaning chores, aggressive and obnoxious fish, etc.) and the high gloss will be the most effective at preventing moisture ingress.
Apply masking tape at the waterline to keep a crisp straight edge. Remove it after each coat of antifoul as it can be difficult to remove if left in place. Bare fibreglass should be primed with an antifouling primer appropriate to the type of antifoul (see our feature How to choose the right antifouling ).
