Mr Hinchliffe said the Daunia project was the first component of the Bowen Basin Coal Growth (BBCG) project. The other two mine components are Caval Ridge Mine, a new opencut mine and associated infrastructure to produce up to Mtpa of coal; and GoonyellaRiverside Mine, an expansion of the existing opencut and underground mining operations to produce up to Mtpa of coal, he said.
The Daunia open cut coal mine was constructed by international construction company Bechtel which provided all the engineering, procurement, management and construction services for the project, using up to 1,000 contractors that were sourced from the skilled resource pools around South East Queensland, the Bowen Basin and Mackay.

BMA operates seven Bowen Basin mines (Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji, Blackwater and Caval Ridge) and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay. With the exception of the Broadmeadow underground longwall operation, BMAs mines are opencut, using dragline and truck and shovel fleets for overburden removal.
The Mt/y Daunia coal mine opened in 2013 and has a truck fleet that includes Cat 793Fs. BMA Asset President, James Palmer, said this was a multigenerational investment in the industry and state at a time when it is needed.

The mine commenced coal production in March 2013 and is expected to have a life of 21 years.
