A new coalbased process to produce high quality DRI for EAF has been developed. This process is characterized by producing reduced iron directly from the mixture of fine ore and fine carbonaceous material, and by melting reduced iron to separate metal and slag in a rotary hearth furnace.
Directreduced iron (DRI), also called sponge iron is produced from direct reduction of iron (in the form of lump, pellets or fines) by a reducing gases produced from natural gas or coal. This reduction takes place in the temperature range 800 1050 degrees C when reducing gases; mainly Hydrogen and Carbonmonoxide; react with the iron oxides to produce iron.

Major DRI production processes are either natural gas based or coal based.
